How do I measure my leadership effectiveness?
It’s a simple question, with no clear answer. Kind of like, “what’s good on this three page menu of food choices?” Ordering well depends on the time of day, who you’re eating with, fresh ingredients, and what you're in the mood for.
Last week I completed a powerful learning experience to become certified in using the Leadership Circle Profile® (LCP) to support leaders in their development. The LCP can help leaders pinpoint where to focus their leadership growth. I chose to learn the LCP because it is distinct from other 360 assessments in several important ways:
Connects leadership behaviors to underlying assumptions. Reflecting on LCP data helps leaders come alongside the assumptions that may be driving many of their behaviors. As leaders understand their mindsets and habits they can leverage these insights to make leadership breakthroughs.
Backed by what we know about leadership and adult development. The LCP is built on the Universal Model of Leadership™ (UML) which integrates a large amount of research about leadership, character structures, and adult development. In other words, results aren’t good or bad. They’re simply a snapshot of leadership competencies here and now, allowing you to grow your capacity over time.
Integrates creative competencies and reactive tendencies. Creative leadership competencies are strongly correlated with effective leaders who are generative, purposeful, and outcome-focused. Reactive tendencies can also be effective, but come with a steep price paid by the leader and organization. The LCP integrates the creative and reactive sides–allowing the leader and coach to build on strengths and target areas of growth that may be limiting organizational performance.
Demonstrates high validity and reliability. The LCP has been normed across a global sample of leaders from various countries and industries. Over 200,000 leaders have been surveyed worldwide by over 3 million evaluators. The Institute for Psychological Research and Application (IPRA, 2008) affirmed that “The LCP is an internally consistent and valid measure for leadership development.”
Complements the executive coaching arc. One of my goals with executive coaching clients is to help them drive their own development and raise their level of conscious leadership. As a leader develops, they improve their capacity to hold complexity–necessary for the leadership challenges faced in today’s environment.
My learning was supported by some truly generous classmates: Elena Armijo, MCC, CDTLF Gary Bagley Mollie Brown Melanie Cossette Patty Leeper, M.S., CPCC Karlee Pierce Rosey Singh MBA, SHRM-CP Sarah Smith Patty Leeper, M.S., CPCC Karlee Pierce Ipek Utun and Su Bin Yeap. Their openness and courage made learning together incredibly powerful.
Also grateful to our Leader: Dave Schrader, PhD who kept us grounded by sharing poetry, hawk sightings, and telling stories of leadership development in action. Nancy Daum provided rock-solid logistical support. This course was clearly a labor of love.
